Science at St Mary's
At our school, we believe that science inspires curiosity, encourages exploration and helps children to make sense of the world around them. Through engaging, practical and enquiry-based learning, we aim to develop confident, enthusiastic young scientists who ask questions, investigate ideas and think critically.
We want our children to:
- Develop secure scientific knowledge and understanding across the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
- Be curious, inquisitive learners who enjoy asking questions and seeking answers about the world around them.
- Think scientifically by planning investigations, making predictions, observing carefully, gathering evidence and drawing conclusions.
- Develop a strong understanding of the nature and processes of science through a range of practical enquiries.
- Use scientific vocabulary accurately and confidently to explain their ideas and findings.
- Apply their mathematical skills to collect, present and analyse data.
- Understand the role science plays in everyday life and its importance in shaping the future.
- Develop resilience, independence and confidence when solving problems and investigating new concepts.
By the time children leave our school, we aim for them to have a secure foundation of scientific knowledge, a greater understanding of the world around them and a lifelong curiosity that encourages them to continue exploring, questioning and learning. They will be equipped with the skills and understanding needed to access the next stage of their education and to become informed, responsible citizens in an increasingly scientific and technological world.
Our Science Curriculum
Our science curriculum is carefully planned around practical, hands-on learning experiences that place children at the heart of scientific enquiry. We believe that children learn science best when they are actively investigating, exploring and discovering for themselves. Through regular opportunities to observe, question, predict, test, measure, record and evaluate, pupils develop and embed the key skills of working scientifically. These practical experiences encourage curiosity, deepen understanding of scientific concepts and help children make meaningful connections between their learning and the world around them. By revisiting and applying these enquiry skills across different topics, pupils build confidence, resilience and independence as young scientists, enabling them to think critically and communicate their ideas using scientific language and evidence.
We are proud to work closely with the RAF Cosford STEM Team to enrich our science curriculum and inspire children through engaging, real-world learning experiences. Throughout the year, pupils take part in a range of high-quality STEM sessions that promote problem-solving, teamwork and scientific enquiry. These sessions are reviewed annually to ensure they continue to meet the needs of our pupils and provide the best possible outcomes. In addition, we celebrate British Science Week each year, offering children exciting opportunities to explore scientific concepts through practical investigations and hands-on activities. These events further develop pupils' working scientifically skills, encouraging them to question, investigate, evaluate and communicate their findings while fostering a lifelong enthusiasm for science.
