PESSPA
PESSPA incorporates the three areas: Physical Education (PE), School Sport (SS) and Physical Activity (PA). These distinct areas are under the remit of the PE lead but have different needs. Our PESSPA policy outlines everything that we do in all areas.
PE
At St Mary's, we want our children to all have the potential to succeed, regardless of physical ability. Beyond The Physical, our chosen scheme, does exactly this. There are three sections to each unit of work (Masterful Mover, Skilful Solver, Confident Connector). Each unit is built around three words (e.g. Evade, Invade, Capture) rather than the traditional sports based units in Key Stage 2. We believe at St Mary's the fundamental movement skills required for high-quality physical education should be mastered; therefore, this approach provides the core learning for our children in PE, only adapting into games when the children are ready.
Our school is an official partner with Beyond the Physical and we utilise their physical literacy - informed and mastery - based PE Scheme of work to teach transformational PE to our children.
Beyond The Physical's curriculum has has been reviewed by the Association for Physical Education through a deep dive by an independent assessor, who validated both the quality and the impact in real school settings.
By creating children who are Masterful Movers, Skilful Solvers and Confident Connectors we ensure every child has a purposeful, meaningful and holistic PE journey during their primary school years to embed a positive experience of physical activity for life.

For PE we also have strong partnerships with some external providers. They provide curriculum teaching, support and/or pathways for our children to continue to experience different sports outside school.
- Wolves Foundation have supported our teachers with CPD and provided football clubs for our children.
- Shropshire Cricket have supported our teachers with CPD and have taught using the All Stars model from the ECB.
- Soccer 2000 provide an after school club for our children.
- Albrighton Tennis Club come to school every year to provide a taster day and a pathway into tennis for our children.
- Albrighton FC have many teams and provide a pathway into organised club football for our children.
- We have worked with Little Sticks (Majesticks GC) as a golf scheme this year.
School Sport
We have a strong school sport offer, linking with our school sport partnership at TrustEd Alliance, who provide competitive sport and festival-based experiences for our children. These take place all over East and South Shropshire, building links with local secondary schools, such as Idsall and Oldbury Wells. We also have an offer from Wolves Foundation, who provide football competition for our children at Compton Park, Aldersley Stadium and Molineux Stadium.We are proud to have been successful in football recently, with our school winning three South Shropshire Schools FA district titles.
