Music

Back to Curriculum

At our school, we are committed to delivering a high-quality music curriculum that inspires a love and enjoyment of music in all pupils. We believe that music is a universal language and one of the highest forms of creativity, and we aim to nurture every child’s musical potential by developing their confidence to perform, compose and collaborate with others.

Our curriculum is designed to engage and inspire pupils, enabling them to become thoughtful musicians who listen with increasing sensitivity and understanding. Through regular opportunities to explore, create and respond to music, children develop critical listening skills alongside their creativity, allowing them to appreciate and engage with a wide range of musical styles and traditions.

We recognise the important role music plays in enriching the cultural capital of our pupils. Through exciting and varied musical opportunities, we aim to broaden their experiences and deepen their understanding of the world around them. Music provides a meaningful way for children to express themselves, build self-confidence and experience a strong sense of achievement.

To support the delivery of our curriculum, we use the Sing Up Music scheme as a foundation. This provides a coherent and progressive structure, supporting a fully integrated approach to musical development. The curriculum connects the key strands of singing, playing, improvising, composing, listening and appraising, ensuring that pupils develop both practical skills and a deeper understanding of musical concepts.

As pupils progress, they are encouraged to think more critically about the music they encounter. They learn to listen with discrimination, reflect on what they hear and apply their knowledge creatively in their own compositions. Through this, children not only develop as musicians but also gain confidence, resilience and pride in their achievements.

Ultimately, we aim for all pupils to leave our school with a strong foundation in music, a love of musical expression, and the confidence to continue their musical journey beyond the classroom.
