Mathematics

At St Mary's, we know that a love and enjoyment of mathematics can unlock so much for children and young people. We wish for our children to be confident in their exploration of different mathematical concepts to be able to apply them within various real life scenarios. We believe in contextualised mathematical learning to be vital for children to become fluent and increasingly confident mathematicians.

NCETM
Our school’s curriculum follows the NCETM Teaching for Mastery approach, alongside the NCETM Mastering Number programme. Both are aligned to the National Curriculum and provide learning in small steps to ensure connections between concepts are made explicit and that learning is highly contextualised. Alongside this, we also run arithmetic practice sessions for our older children to allow specific practice of methods of calculation and consolidation of learning within calculation.

Language development is key in all our maths lessons and by using precise mathematical and stem sentences, this offers the children a scaffold to broaden and articulate their mathematical thinking. Children use this vocabulary right the way through school.

The NCETM materials we use to teach with are readily available on this website: https://www.ncetm.org.uk/teaching-for-mastery/
