Welcome back! We hope that you have all had a super Easter holiday and are ready for an exciting time in Year 1.
Here are just a few things that you might feel are helpful to know about life in Year 1:
Teachers—There are two of us! Mrs.Maybury teaches on a Monday /Tuesday and Miss Jenkinson teaches the remainder of the week. We speak to each other several times during the week, so be reassured that if you have made contact with one of us for any reason, it will have been shared with the other . There is no need speak to us both! We are lucky that Mrs.Griffiths will be out class TA, and she brings her wealth of knowledge with her. Miss.Osborne will also be working in Y1 on a Friday.
PE—The children will have 2 x PE sessions a week. Please make sure that they have their kit in school on a Monday . Don’t forget to label it all - even the pumps/trainers!
Forest Schools—Mrs.Maybury is our Forest Schools guru and she is planning to run some forest schools sessions on Monday afternoons. She will notify you by text when these are coming up and the children will need to bring suitable clothing on that day.
School Diary/ Reading Record —Your child will need to bring this in to school and hand it in every day. This is our communication line with you and they are checked daily. Feel free to pop a note in, if there is anything you need to let us know and we will do likewise. Please record all reading comments in here too, and if you need a book changing.
Home learning— This is a tricky one as some parents love home learning, others dread it! We are going to aim to keep it simple at the start of the year. Reading is key to everything, so the more you can do the better! Just 10 mins a day and sharing a book at bedtime makes a huge difference.
Phonics— Phonics (Letters and sounds) are key to reading and writing. They play a big part in the Y1 curriculum. The children will have to complete a phonic screening assessment (set by the government) in June. We will send home activities that will support their learning in school and we will also enclose a phonic sound checklist that you can keep at home. It is imperative that the children are confident in reading/recognising the different letter strings and what sounds they make.
Spellings—The children will soon be given a yellow book with some spellings to learn, for a test the following week. Please do not practise in their books, these are for new spellings and tests only.
We will let the children find their feet and then add more home learning into the week where we feel it is appropriate. Don’t forget that there is always education city where they can access activities.
Topic—This term our topic will be ‘Castles’ We are hoping to visit Stafford castle very soon! Watch this space!
End of the day—We will dismiss the children one at a time from the classroom at the end of the day. Please come and say hello and introduce yourself this week as a lot of you are unfamiliar faces to us. Also please don’t forget to let us know via the school diary if there is someone else who will be collecting your child at the end of the day, or if they are at a club/playden. We are unable to release children to other adults unless we have prior notification. Remember to phone to school office if there is to be a change in person collecting your child.
We look forward to a successful year working together!
