Here are just a few things that you might feel are helpful to know about life in Year 1:
Teachers—There are two of us! Mrs Maybury teaches on a Monday /Tuesday and Miss Jenkinson teaches the remainder of the week. We speak to each other several times during the week, so be reassured that if you have made contact with one of us for any reason, it will have been shared with the other . There is no need speak to us both! We are lucky that Miss Ellis is moving up with the class and brings her wealth of knowledge about the children with her. On a Friday Mrs. Weaver will be the TA.

PE—The children will have 2 x PE sessions a week. Please make sure that they have their kit in school on a Monday and it will be returned on a Friday. Don’t forget the label it- even the pumps/trainers!
Forest Schools—Mrs Maybury is our Forest Schools guru and she is planning to link up with Reception and run some Forest Schools afternoons. She will notify you by text when these are coming up and the children will need to bring/wear suitable clothing on that day.
Diary—Your child will need to bring this in to school and hand it in every day. This is our communication line with you and they are checked daily. Feel free to pop a note in, if there is anything you need to let us know and we will do likewise.
Home learning— This is a tricky one as some parents love home learning, others dread it! We are going to aim to keep it simple at the start of the year. Reading is key to everything, so the more you can do the better! Just 10 mins a day and sharing a book at bedtime makes a huge difference.
Spellings—The children will soon be given a yellow book with some spellings to learn, for a test the following week. Please do not practise in their books, these are for new spellings and tests only.
We will let the children find their feet and then add more home learning into the week where we feel it is necessary. Don’t forget that there is always education city where they can access activities.
Reading—We aim to change their books once a week (sometimes more if we are lucky to benefit from parent helpers). If you want your child’s book changing more than this please write a note in their home diary. They will also have a reading record book, where you can record their reading at home and comment etc, however these are not checked daily like the diaries are.
On a Friday the children will visit the school Library and have the opportunity to choose a book to bring home. Please make sure that the book is in their bag ready for return the following Friday. The children will not be allowed another book until the previous one is returned. They are also free to visit the Library on Mondays and Tuesdays to change books should they wish.
End of the day—We will dismiss the children one at a time from the classroom at the end of the day. Please come and say hello and introduce yourself this week as a lot of you are unfamiliar faces to us. Also please don’t forget to let us know via the school diary if there is someone else who will be collecting your child at the end of the day, or if they are at a club/playden.
We look forward to a successful year working together!
